Young Global Leaders and Alumni Annual Summit: Co-Creating a Sustainable Future

The Forum of Young Global Leaders (YGL) is an initiative of the World Economic Forum. It is a leadership programme and a highly sought-after peer network, comprising more than 1,200 enterprising and impact-oriented leaders from around the world working as a force for good. The membership is bestowed by the Forum each year to recognize the most distinguished leaders under the age of 40. These individuals are selected based on their groundbreaking work, creative approaches to problems and ability to build bridges across cultures and between business, government and civil society.

Emerging technologies are redefining our world, creating new norms and ethical frameworks that now govern business, society and humanity. New challenges require new skills and mind-sets, prompting a growing need to promote leadership that engenders a sustainable future where we can thrive together, as individuals and as technology-enabled groups. Leadership matters more than ever as society strives to manage this fundamental transformation occurring in industries, cities and systems.

For the first time, the Forum of Young Global Leaders and its Alumni community will gather in the United States for what is expected to be the largest and most sustainable gathering in our history. Under the theme of Co-Creating a Sustainable Future, this year’s Summit will use San Francisco as a window into these trends and examine ways to harness the Fourth Industrial Revolution as a positive force while mitigating its unintended consequences.

On the agenda

The Summit is designed to inspire fresh thinking on current geopolitical, economic and social issues; explore the policy and practical adaptation required to thrive in the Fourth Industrial Revolution; and drive progress towards building a sustainable future. Over the course of three days we aim to:

Explore the Scene: Investigate the impact of technology and innovation first-hand within the Bay Area and the region’s identity in the global context;
Contribute to Systems Change: Explore how to leverage the power of the YGL community to actively create and shape a more prosperous and sustainable future;
Redefine Leadership: Learn the skills tools required for leadership in an increasingly complex world; and
Elevate the Community: Strengthen bonds through meaningful connections and relationships built on the YGL Guiding Principles of respect, generosity and authenticity and impact.

A Sustainable and Carbon-neutral event

The World Economic Forum is committed to limiting its environmental footprint. To support this mission, the Forum of Young Global Leaders is organizing this year’s Annual Summit as a carbon neutral event. This entails fuel-efficient transport, sourcing from sustainability vendors, and minimizing energy usage, among other methods. As the most environmentally sustainable event in our community’s history, this summit will serve as a model for future events, within the community and the Forum.

Who is taking part?

This October, we are expecting more than 600 attendees, representing our community of impressive young leaders from multiple sectors, regions and backgrounds. Last year’s YGL Annual Summit 2017 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, attracted more than 400 YGLs, Alumni and spouses.

Public figures: Ministers, public-sector leaders and policy-makers
Business leaders: Influential business leaders harnessing technology to drive growth
Social entrepreneurs: Leaders driving social change with innovative business solutions and models
Cultural leaders: Artists challenging assumptions about technology and building bridges to address global issues
Civil society organizations: Leaders driving social progress from non-governmental and labour organizations
